ADHD is a developmental disorder characterized by extreme restlessness (hyperactivity) and an inability to concentrate (inattention). A child with ADHD may not cope well with frustration and may have extreme mood swings. Reading, studying and schoolwork are hard for these kids. Frequently teachers don’t respond well to them because they are disruptive and difficult in class; often they do poorly in school as a result.

Symptoms of ADHD

You may want to have your child evaluated if, in addition to some of the previously mentioned traits, he or she is:

  • easily distracted
  • impulsive
  • hyperactive
  • performing poorly in school
  • fidgety
  • having difficulty following directions when asked the first time

There are no simple tests for ADHD; diagnosis is made by pediatricians, child mental health professionals and neurologists.

Treatment for ADHD

While there is no cure for ADHD, there is treatment, which includes behavior therapy and medication. Ritalin is frequently prescribed, some may say too frequently. Biofeedback is now being used quite successfully with ADHD. If your child is diagnosed with this disorder, talk to your doctor at length about how to proceed and include your child’s input in the decision.

Many older children and adults outgrow their diagnosis. There are many successful graduate students who have compensated nicely for their ADHD.
