Let Children Solve Problems

Let Children Solve Problems

Children develop self-confidence by solving problems appropriate to their abilities. Instead of rushing in to help your child, allow time for creative thinking. I know a teacher who assigned the usual homework of constructing a model of the solar system . . . with no Styrofoam balls allowed! Parents actually called, complaining their children couldn't possibly complete the assignment without Styrofoam balls. The wise teacher told parents to relax and let children find a solution. They did, including a model of Jupiter and Pluto made from a combination of glue and dryer lint!

Although this example may offer a look into your child's future, it is relevant even if you have an adventurous toddler or preschooler. Let him explore his world and solve the problems involved in his daily life. Let him learn how to effectively spread the peanut butter for his sandwich, or encourage him how to figure out how to dress or undress himself without help. Help him learn how to use his abilities to complete tasks; getting simple jobs done can help a child feel great accomplishment.

As a parent, you can indeed offer support and encouragement to your child. But you can go even a step further and allow her to explore her own abilities and revel in her own accomplishments. These tips for encouraging self confidence can breathe new spirit into your child, instilling confidence in her that will last a lifetime.
