Teaching the Virtues: Raising a Moral Child

Morality vs. Reality

By Mary Dixon Lebeau

Once upon a time, we learned the difference between right and wrong each night through the reading of our favorite bedtime story.

Dad or mom would read, “The moral of the story is….” followed by a piece of wisdom that we, the children, would fervently promise to apply to our own lives.  Because of these stories, our Sunday school classes, and the ever-present role models who surrounded us, we formulated our own boundaries, a conscience, and a definite idea of what was right and what was wrong.

Flash forward now to the 21st century.  In today’s tumultuous society, morality often gets brushed aside as just another part of the fairy tale, and those learning moments of our youth become just another “happily ever after” tale that seems unbelievable by today’s standards.
