I Love School!

by Cheri Smolich

The adventures of a brother and sister on their first day of school.

What a joy to read this excellent picture book for three to six-year-olds and see the smiles on my grandson's face.

The story, written in rhyme with nice big print, begins with two children as they head out for their first day of school. First, we see them waiting with their mother as the big yellow school bus approaches. From there the bus takes them and their friends to school where they meet their teacher and start their fun day of reading, writing, counting, singing, painting, and so much more. Of course the day would not be complete without recess and lunch. Then comes story time when their teacher reads a lively, entertaining tale to the class. And what do the kids like most about school? Their teacher! Finally, the school day ends and their teacher waves good-bye as the school bus pulls away carrying the children back to their home. I love the big bold print and the large, colorful illustrations. The illustrations also match the rhythmic text perfectly so kids can truly "see" the school children drawing, swinging, playing kickball and eating lunch, etc.

The story shows school as a warm and friendly place -- a place your child will want to be. Also notable in the illustrations is the diversity of the children represented. With help from the vivid pictures, little ones who can't read yet will enjoy telling the story back to you; that is exactly what my grandson likes to do for me. I loved "I Love School" and recommend it to parents and teachers.
